Vacation...and more

So our trip was amazing. We really cannot complain about anything. The food was excellent for an all inclusive. We tend to find that at the buffets in all inclusive resorts the food on your plate tends to all taste the same (no matter what dish you pick, chicken, beef, rice, veggies, etc) but at our resort everything had its own taste. The buffet would have a "make your own" station at each meal. Breakfasts were by far the best, we had omelets made how we wanted each morning. During breakfast they also had "breakfast potatoes" as they were labelled, for us at home they'd be McCain curly fries, but good none the less! Lunch we'd usually eat at an outdoor grill restaurant, La Iguana, and they had things like burgers, chicken wings and pizza. We could also get fresh salsa and guacamole with nachos throughout the day, as a snack, which I loved. Dinner was buffet or a la carte and we enjoyed an a la carte dinner twice. The beef in Mexico was really good, nice and tender. Our room was great, on the 4th floor of the building, and was ocean view even though we had paid for a garden view. Another nice thing about our resort was the towels and sheets always smelt fresh and clean, not musty smelling as we have found with some resorts. Drinks were great, we met a nice bartender named Arturo. There was also a bartender named Jesus at the pool bar so Ryan likes saying now that he's "found a friend in Jesus". It was funny too because Jesus had a friend named Mary (who sold cool jewelry and did henna tattoos on the beach). We met a nice couple from Burlington who we will keep in touch with. There were also a lot of nice Americans we met, including the "Jersey Girls" and my new boyfriend Spencer (who shares my birthday!). I'll provide the link to our pictures once I get them all loaded on to Rogers. The resort was only at 40% capacity so we never had a problem getting food, drinks, or a chair by the pool or on the beach. The water near our resort was crystal clear and Ryan enjoyed snorkeling with Jason at the beginning of our trip. Our weather was fantastic too, with only one day of rain.

And now on to why I haven't blogged since we've been back...

I was going down Durham 30 on Tuesday and this guy was driving like an idiot in front of me, I got the opportunity to pass him, so I tried. When I was accelerating to pass him I hit black ice and started to slide towards hitting him. I corrected that and started to slide towards a telephone pole on my left side. I avoided hitting the pole by about 12 inches but went down the ditch on the left of the road and rolled the car 3 times hood to trunk over the top (not side to side) according to the witnesses I was air born quite a bit. I landed upside down in a swampy/creek area and managed to somehow open the door and get out of the car (that part of it is a bit foggy). The witnesses helped me up the hill to the road and we called 911. It happened around 8:45 but they didn't get my car out of the ditch until 11. I'm ok, I wasn't charged at all, as they attributed the accident to the road conditions (lucky for me). We had the car towed to Pfaff's shop and it is a write off they've confirmed. It actually didn't look that bad but the frame and everything must be messed up. The back window was busted too so there was mud and stuff all in the car and glass all over and if they were to fix the car the interior must be re-done. The police officer actually said the Jetta pretty much saved my life. He said had I been driving a Grand Am or Sunfire it would have crumpled and there is no way I would have walked away from the crash. Needless to say safety ratings will come in to play when shopping for a new car. I spent the rest of the day at the hospital getting xrays and stuff. The Dr. has told me to take a few days off work, she gave me a dr's note, and a prescription for Tylenol 3 for the pain. My computer didn't survive the crash (my laptop bag was open a bit and the computer is covered in mud and not working). I've learnt my lesson - trying to get to work a bit faster doesn't work as I never ended up making it Tuesday! So now I'm vowing to be a "zen" driver and try to not let idiots like that guy bother me, we'll see how long that lasts. Oh and I think I had hit the back of his car too and he took off. Nice eh? I think he knew the accident was his fault. That was my fun with the ice storm! Needless to say I wish we were away this week and I had avoided the whole storm and accident.

More on my insurance claim and car shopping to come! And here is a picture taken on Chris Colucci's cell phone of my car upside down in the ditch...

Good Lord! I just got off 4 days of work and I only heard about the accident today from Mom who heard from Cathy the other day. I decided to check the blog and see if there was any news. So glad to hear that you're okay and the jetta for sure saved you - we usually don't hear about these kinds of accidents without the person having at least a few broken bones. you are one lucky girl! perhaps in your search for a new car you might peruse my dream volvo - stylish and extremely safe (although quite unaffordable for me), you might enjoy my S60 or V50...

happy shopping :)

Hi Jenn! I know you're a Volvo fanatic and I know Volvos have a name that is closely associated with safety. It seems as though you've fallen victim to modern marketing. It's a little known fact that Volkswagens are actually just as safe (if not more so) than Volvos! The Jetta actually beat the S60 in a string of tests conducted by the IIHS (comparison is here: Volvo - http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=567 / Jetta - http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=231). So, Jenn... When will you be picking up your new Volkswagen? I still love ya & just wanted to bug ya ;)
