Municipal Election 2006

Soon we will be heading to the poles and I find that I am not very informed for this election. Earlier this year our mayor, Jamie (James) Young, came to our house along with councillor Cathy Morton. I must say Ryan and I were quite impressed that the mayor and a councillor took time out of their weekend to introduce themselves to us and our neighbours. They simply knocked on our door, introduced themselves, asked us if we had any questions or concerns about the neighbourhood (and about East Gwillimbury in general) and gave us their cards so we knew how to contact them. Election year or not, we were very surprised that the mayor had come by to talk to us. I don’t recall that ever happening in Newmarket. Cathy also personally canvassed our neighbourhood and we were not home at the time so she left a hand written note on her brochure stating she was sorry she had missed us. Needless to say, both Cathy and Jamie get our vote. Now who are the other 3 councillors who will get my vote? I found a great site for those of you living in York Region, www.elections.directoryyorkregion.com which has a little blurb about each candidate. I’ve found that I am not seeing a whole lot of election literature on the candidates and this site gave me a bit more information to base my decision on. If I remember correctly from the last municipal election (when I voted in Newmarket) our councillors had such a close race that some in our ward won by only a few votes. Get out there and vote!
