Boy or Girl?

It seems our (read: Ryan's) decision to not find out the sex of the baby is not a common one. I am clearly looking quite pregnant now at 29 weeks and I've been having strangers ask me lots of pregnancy questions lately. The weird thing I find is that people cannot believe that we do not know the sex of baby. I guess these days it is more common to know than not know. I doubt our parents ever experienced the shock and looks on people's faces when you tell them you are waiting to find out. And while I didn't want to wait I have to admit it is making things exciting, and frustrating at the same time. I'm excited to meet the baby in hopefully 11 weeks or less (although we would like it to wait until January to arrive so that we do not have a child who is the youngest in its class in school as Ryan was). I'm excited to see if it is a boy or a girl; however I am finding decorating the nursery VERY hard. I can't find neutral bedding I like, and believe me I've scoured the internet, stores when we were away in the Boston area, and stores in Canada. If I do find bedding I like it is way more than what I'm willing to spend (if I didn't spend $400 on the bedding for our bed I don't plan on spending that on baby, plus I can think of better uses for $400). So I think we may resort to buying material and making the bedding. Also these days Health Canada advises against using a bumper pad in the crib so really all that we need is the dust ruffle, and maybe the valence and an accent pillow or two. Problem now is the material I've found that I like is $25/metre (I've also scoured the internet and numerous stores for fabric and come up empty handed). Ouch. At least we don't need a lot.

On another note I've been trying to find a modern, smaller scale, LaZBoy type rocker/glider recliner chair that doesn't look like your typical LaZBoy (over sized, plush cushions) for the nursery. This has also been quite difficult. I have searched numerous furniture stores and come up empty handed. One lady at one of the stores told me if you do find what you are looking for please come back and tell me where you found it because she has so many customers ask if such a product exists. I may have found one at Leon's that will do. My other issue is I figure I'd like a chair in the nursery but we might as well get one that we can use in the rest of the house once the baby is old enough as you aren't going to use it for very long in the baby's room. Perhaps I should go in to furniture and baby bedding design.

We didn't know what we were having, and when I told our sonographer (sp Shannon?) that we didn't *want* to know, she was so much nicer to us! (Apparently, where she worked about 95% of the parents who came in wanted to know, and she thought it was pleasantly refreshing that we didn't.) Whatever - I respect people for both decisions. We just wanted it to be a surprise...

As for decorating, we had a navy/cranberry/green theme, and I thought it would work for either a boy or a girl. We bought a beige upholstered glider rocker from Costco (which now lives in our living room) and a beige fitted sheet for the crib. I made a crib quilt (in those colours), and a navy skirt for the crib.

I know people who have spent a lot of money on the crib bedding only to regret it later, on the grounds that it is expensive, it is not used for very long, and it's "unsafe" - re: bumper pads, and pillows. I was perfectly happy with what we had, but then again, I can be over-the-top thrifty. ;)

Anyhow, good luck with your search... I'm sure you'll find something, and heck - if you don't find something until after the baby comes you could always just get something pink or blue. ;)

Hey Katie :)

I just thought I'd add my two cents regarding finding out baby's gender...

Now, I've never actually done an "official" count regarding how many find out versus how many don't, but in my experience, I'd say that for first time parents, around 60% of people do not want to know what they are having at their ultrasound. However, when it comes to baby #2, more parents want to know what they're having - it seems they want to be prepared for what's coming ;)

I'd be interested to see what other sonographers (yes Becky, you spelled it correctly!) had to say on the subject - I would imagine it might depend a lot on the area in which you live.

Either way, I think there are a few too many people who get way too hung up about the sex of their baby. I can't tell you how many people come in for their ultrasound "to find out the sex". The gender of the baby, in most cases, does not need to be known for any medical reason (if it does need to be known, then you're going to get an amniocentesis!). So really, it's just a favour we do because we know how excited people are about their new babies!

Okay - down I get from my soapbox ;)

ps: weird that Becky's sonographer was all nice when she found out Becky and Keith didn't want to know - as far as I am concerned, there are very good reasons for finding out and very good reasons for not! Totally a personal thing. And there are loads of people who always thought they'd never find out and then did (for whatever reason) and they find reasons to be ever so happy they did find out... and there are loads of people who manage to survive just fine when they couldn't find out (and they really really wanted to know), that were then so glad that they had to wait and get surprised :)

Right... just to clarify about my sonographer - I remember her explaining that the area was highly "ethnic" - whatever that meant, it was at Jane and the 400 (?) - and that there were a lot of ethnic people who "needed" to know what they were having. (Which could explain the astonishing high statistic (95%) that she gave me.) It was almost disturbing the way she was going on about it... (she was also white).

By the way, *if* I ever had another kid, I think I would be more inclined to find out. First baby - I wanted the surprise. Second baby? I'm not so sure I'd want to wait, so I guess I'd fit in well in Oshawa. ;)
